Pigbag at The Jazz Cafe 26th March 2011

Here’s a video from YouTube of the new band doing “Papa’s…”

The same person has a few other vids from the night:

I’ll try to write some more about the gig, but it was good to meet Ollie and Chris afterwards, as well as former Pigbaggers Jim and Chip who were in the audience. The band played three old Pigbag songs, Papa’s…, Sunny Day and Brazil Nuts as well as quite a few new songs.

Chris Lee has uploaded a couple of photos of the new Pigbag line up to the Pigbag Facebook page.

Bristol gig for new Pigbag – Fri 8th April – UPDATE: Postponed

Pigbag have announced another gig for the reformed band.

This time it’s at the Fiddlers Club in Bristol on Friday 8th April – tickets can be purchased at http://www.artistticket.com/

The band have been rehearsing in preparation for the forthcoming gigs and today played “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag” for the first time in 27 years!

Update: Message from Pigbag Twitter account on Thu 7th April: “Pigbag gig at Fiddlers Bristol postponed. Not our fault – promoters did not do publicity properly. Sorry if anyone made plans. New date TBC.”

Another Pigbag gig announced – Fri 18th March

The newly re-born Pigbag have announced another gig through their Facebook page.

This one will be just over a week before the previously announced London gig, so unless otherwise announced, will be their first gig since Portsmouth in 1983.

The gig will be at the Exeter Phoenix on Friday 18th March 2011. Tickets available from  http://www.artistticket.com/

** UPDATE: This gig was cancelled **

New Instinct release!

Perhaps in response to my earlier plea, ZTT are releasing an Instinct track on one of their new compilations.

The album is “The Art of the 12 Inch” (Catalogue number SALVODCD213) with track 6 on CD1 being “Sleepwalking – 12inch Extended Mix” by Instinct. The album is released on 7th February 2011.

The track is previously unreleased and, to be honest, I thought it would never see the light of day.

Pigbag – New line-up announced

The Jazz Cafe website now has more details about the 26th March gig.

The new line up features original members Chris Lee (trumpet – the Pogues, Kirsty MacColl), Ollie Moore (saxes – Neneh Cherry, The Abyssinians) and Kofi Adu (drum kit – Osibisa, Mulato Astatke) alongside new converts Annie Whitehead (trombone – Jamiroqui, Dr John), Mark Jay Smith (bass – Hardware, Infinite Wheel), Jessica Lauren (keyboards – Tom Browne, Juliet Roberts), Godwin Awala (percussion – Kush, Nana Tsiboe) and Ed Riches (guitar – Beverley Knight, Omar).

This talented new line up has been writing fresh material that fuses exciting, joyful dance beats with punchy horn lines and surreal arrangements.

Pigbag Reunion Gig Date!

It’s been a while coming but I spotted a Pigbag gig on an email from Ticketmaster.

Saturday 26th March 2011 at The Jazz Cafe in London.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 2pm according to the page on TicketMaster.

Nothing about it on the official Pigbag or Jazz Cafe websites yet.

Angela Jaeger at Ari Up tribute Punky Reggae Birthday Party

A bit late but I noticed that Angela from Pigbag was one of the many artists participating in the “Punky Reggae Birthday Party” in New York in tribute to Ari Up of The Slits who died last year. The event was on Sunday 16th January 2011.

More info at the blog on The Village Voice.

No Pigbag reunion for 2010

I’ve just heard from Brian Nevill that there won’t be a Pigbag reunion this year after all.
We’ll have to console ourselves with the excellent re-issue CD/downloads.

And there’s always the prospect that the reunion may happen next year.

We live in hope!

ZTT Instinct page

The ZTT label's page about Instinct

ZTT's Instinct page

After 25 years of pretty much ignoring the fact that Instinct ever existed, ZTT finally have a web page for the band – http://www.ztt.com/artists/instinct_1.html

It’s just the text from the “Value of Entertainment” programme, complete with a misspelling of James’ surname, but it’s a start.

Now if ZTT could dig through their archives and unearth some/any of the Instinct material while they are compiling their excellent “Element” series of re-issues, I’d be even happier.
